Calibration of Flow Measurements

For flow meter calibration, PREMIER CALIBRATION SDN BHD carry out manufacturer- and media-independent calibrations. Our team specializes in high-precision and customized flow calibration solutions.

By definition, a flow meter must measure – and totalize – the amount of liquid that flows through it. It doesn’t matter whether the liquids are diesel or petrol or whether they are oils and lubricants with a higher or lower viscosity.

Hence the need for a measurement that is as accurate as possible, taking into account the accuracy indicated on the technical sheet of the device itself. In order to achieve this, you need to calibrate your flow meter correctly. And, if necessary, carry out regular checks and recalibrations. Corrosion, fluid contamination and use itself are variables that over time cause even the sturdiest of flowmeters to wear down and require calibration to ensure accurate measurements. According to the International Vocabulary of Metrology, Flow Meter calibration is “a process which, under specified conditions, first establishes a relationship between quantitative values with measurement uncertainties provided by measurement standards and corresponding indications with associated measurement uncertainties, and second uses this information to establish a relationship for obtaining a measurement result from an indication”.

Industrial flow measurement is becoming increasingly important due to the requirements for constant product quality, safety, process optimization and environmental protection. Due to the wide range of flow meters, measurement methods and media, measurement technology is rarely standardized. Consequently, an individual solution is also required for the calibration.

How Do You Get The Correct Flow Meter Calibration?

Each gauge has its own method.  These are some tips for all gauges that we recommend you stick to.
  1. ALWAYS CALIBRATE FLOW METER

Even if the flow meter is already calibrated by the manufacturer (most manufacturers  calibrate all their meters during the production and testing phase), we advise you to calibrate it again. The reason for this is that the flow meter has to adapt to the real operating conditions: temperature, system, liquid.

  1. FIRST INSTALL, THEN CALIBRATION

Calibration is a procedure that must be performed after the dispensing system is fully installed, not before. Because all the components of the system have a direct impact on the transfer itself: the length of the line, the presence or absence of a filter, the temperature etc. These are all variables that can alter the result. Therefore, the rule is simple: first install, then calibrate.

  1. AIR

To be sure the gauge has not counted the air that may be present in the system and may have flowed through the unit, we always recommend deflating the system and using a good foot valve on the suction side.

  1. TEMPERATURE: FRIEND OR FOE

Enormous temperature fluctuations, especially in the summer/winter passage and vice versa, have a significant impact on the final count by affecting the liquid itself (which, for example, becomes more or less viscous). For this reason, it is good to recalibrate whenever there is a significant thermal change.

  1. EACH LIQUID HAS ITS OWN CALIBRATION

Calibration must be performed with the same liquid used during the transfer process; it is not possible to calibrate a flow meter with oil used with diesel.

  1. GRADUATED VESSEL: YOUR ALLY

How much liquid needs to be dosed to get a correct calibration? There is no universal answer. Certainly it is necessary to use an appropriate amount of liquid depending on the liquid to be dispensed. We recommend always using a 20 liter measuring container into which the liquid is dispensed during the calibration process. If it is diesel, we suggest dispensing the entire 20 liters. If it is an oil, 5 liters should be enough.

The above information should be considered as flow meter calibration advice and could be varied for different models of gauge.  From the test bench design to software development – highly specialized flow rate experts with many years of experience, PREMIER CALIBRATION SDN BHD have set up the  flow meter calibration service with the highest level of know-how. The versatility of the flow meters used in industry requires a wide range of test benches and calibrators. Nine specially designed liquid calibrators guarantee you rapid calibration of different flow rates and media. For more information, please contact us for more inquiry.
