Safety Valve Calibration

The Key to Industrial Safety

The Importance and Benefits of Safety Valve Calibration Services

In industrial plants, safety valves serve as the final shield against hazards. They are crucial for safeguarding machinery, pipelines, and even the lives of workers by activating automatically when pressure surpasses the specified limit.

However, safety valves cannot maintain their reliability without routine calibration.

The safety valve calibration service can help with this. In order to ensure that the safety valve performs precisely at the intended pressure, it must be experimentally operated and its operating properties, such as operating pressure, relief pressure, and reclosing pressure, checked and adjusted using a variety of measurement tools.

The primary advantages of safety valve calibration services

  1. Enhanced safety measures for equipment
Prevents serious accidents caused by malfunctions and minimizes the risk of workplace accidents.
  2. Adherence to regulations and laws
Regular safety valve calibration is required in many nations and areas under the Occupational Safety and Health Act and DSM/ISO standards. Penalties and business suspension may result from failing to comply.
  3. Increased dependability and productivity efficiency
Achieves stable operation and prevents abrupt shutdowns. Consequently, it also results in lower costs and increased manufacturing efficiency.
  4. Advantageous for obtaining validation certification and applying for insurance
Calibration records are crucial documents for ISO evaluation and insurance coverage verification.

Validation flow of Safety Valve from a Technical perspective :

  1. Removal of valve and pre-inspection
Check for abnormal wear, rust, leaks, etc.
  2. Testing operation on a test bench
Record the opening pressure, operation delay, and reclosing pressure when the set pressure is reached.
  3. Adjustment and retest
Adjust the spring as necessary to match the target value.
  4. Issuing a certificate and submitting a report with calibration sticker
After calibration, submitting a traceable calibration certificate to customer.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Safety Valve Calibration Services

Safety valve calibration is the process of testing and adjusting a pressure relief valve to ensure it opens (cracks) at its designated set pressure and reseats properly. This is critical for protecting personnel, equipment, and the environment. A valve that opens too late can lead to over-pressurization and catastrophic failure, while one that opens too early can cause process shutdowns and product loss.

The frequency depends on the service conditions, the type of valve, industry standards, and local regulations. Common intervals are every 12 or 24 months. Valves in corrosive, high-cycle, or critical service may require more frequent testing. Always refer to the original equipment manufacturer’s recommendations and your site’s Process Safety Management (PSM) guidelines.

  • Bench Testing: The valve is removed from the process and tested in a dedicated calibration workshop. This is the most accurate method, allows for full inspection and repair, and is often required for recertification.
  • In-Situ Testing: The valve is tested while installed on the equipment using specialized, portable test kits. This is faster and avoids process downtime but is typically a verification test and may not allow for adjustments.

A comprehensive service includes:

  • Visual inspection for damage or corrosion.
  • Testing of set pressure, reseat pressure, and blowdown.
  • Adjustment and calibration to the required set point (depend on model).
  • Final performance test and certification.

You should receive a detailed Validation Certificate or Test Report. This document is crucial for compliance and audit trails. It typically includes the valve tag number, set pressure, test pressures, test date, the standard used, and the technician’s details.

No, as a calibration service provider, we shall focus on calibration. Customers are advised to get repair service from the supplier or manufacturer.

No. Seals (like lead or wire seals) are administrative controls to indicate the valve hasn’t been tampered with. They do not guarantee the valve’s mechanical functionality. Over time, springs can fatigue, internals can corrode, and seats can erode. Regular functional testing is the only way to ensure it will operate when needed.

Skipping calibration carries significant risks, including:

  • Safety Hazards: Potential for equipment rupture, fires, or explosions.
  • Regulatory Non-Compliance: Heavy fines and operational shutdowns from authorities like OSHA.
  • Production Loss: Unplanned downtime due to equipment failure or forced shutdown during an audit.
  • Voided Warranties/Insurance: Insurance claims may be denied if equipment fails without a proper maintenance history.

Look for a provider with:

  • Experience & Expertise: Proven track record with your specific valve brands and industry.
  • Range of Services: Ability to perform both bench testing and on-site services.
  • Quality Documentation: They must provide clear, traceable, and validated certificates.
